Moving a grandfather clock – or any long-case clock – can be very challenging. There are so many things to take into consideration, such as; weight, size, moving parts and how fragile they are.
Before deciding to take on the move yourself, you should determine if it would be better to use a professional removal service.
Grandfather clocks are large and unwieldy and can be difficult to attempt to move by yourself. Due to their large size and delicate internal mechanisms, it is extremely easy to damage them during a move. It is vital you use a well-trained long-case clock moving service, to ensure you protect your cherished item.
Grandfather Clocks
Though often referred to as a grandfather clock they also go by various other names such as a longcase clock, tall-case clock, or floor clock.
Grandfather clocks are tall, freestanding, weight-driven pendulum clocks with the pendulum held inside the tower of the clock case.
These style of clocks are commonly 1.8–2.4 metres tall. The case often features elaborately carved ornamentation on the hood (or bonnet), which surrounds and frames the dial, or clock face.
Did you know?
Until the early 20th century, pendulum clocks were the world’s most accurate timekeeping technology, and longcase clocks, due to their superior accuracy, served as time standards for households and businesses. (Wikipedia)
The Origins
The Origin of the Term ‘Grandfather Clock’
Officially called longcase clocks, so why do were more commonly know them as grandfather clocks? Well, the Oxford English Dictionary states that the popular 1876 song My Grandfather’s Clock is responsible for the common name “grandfather clock” being applied to the longcase clock.
What’s a Grandmother or a Granddaughter clock?
You might also be wondering what a grandmother clock is, or even a granddaughter clock!
The short answer is, they are usually shorter, slimmer, grandfather or longcase clocks. But apparently, there isn’t a hard and fast rule. Though a clock could be marketed as a grandmother clock, a granddaughter clock or a small grandfather clock, they are all long-case clocks.
Some antique specialist (link) says “standard grandmother clocks tend to have been made in the 1920’s and 30’s and vary between 5’4” and 5’9” in height.”
The website also states that 6’3″ and below is more common for grandmother clocks, and anything below 5’2″ would be a granddaughter clock.
But really, they are all longcase clocks, and they all deserve and require careful handling and protection when being moved. So make sure you get the best for longcase clock removals!
